23,000 Yazidi Families Displaced in Duhok Camps Amid Return Mandate
Over 25,000 families remain displaced in IDP camps in Duhok province, with 92 percent being Yazidis, according to the director of migration and refugees in Duhok. Additionally, 37,800 families live outside the camps.
Since the beginning of the year, around 500 families have returned to Sinjar, and the repatriation process is ongoing.
Currently, 25,600 families are in 15 camps in Duhok, while 37,800 are outside the camps.
The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Refugees has mandated that all camps in the Kurdistan Region be evacuated by July 30, 2024. Refugees must return home after receiving compensation, a decision that has sparked protests among some IDPs from Sinjar.
The ministry has allocated four million Iraqi dinars per family returning to Sinjar. However, the official expressed concerns, stating, "More than 80 percent of the houses in Sinjar have been destroyed, and 15 million dinars should be allocated to each family to enable them to repair their homes and facilitate their safe return."
